Before starting, I would like to remind you that cats don’t pee out of the litter box to “get back at the owner”.
Once we have identified that the cat is urinating and not spraying, we need to discover why.
There are 2 reasons for inappropriate urination: medical or behavioural.
Behavioural problems:
We know that we are in front of a behavioural problem, after excluding medical conditions at the vets with appropriate exploration and testing.
The two main reasons for (behavioural) inappropriate urination include:
- Litter box or litter issues: cleanliness, subtract avoidance, difficulty to go in and out in geriatric cats, location or number of litter boxes, etc.
- Stress/anxiety: inter-cat conflict, new baby at home, holidays, Christmas, separation anxiety, etc.
We will need to identify the cause
of the behaviour and treat it specifically. Most of the time, different factors are contributing to this behavioural problem, and we need a multimodal treatment.
Just as a reminder, behavioural issues require time and effort to be solved; so, be patient and comprehensive to your cat; punishment is not an option and can make the situation even worse.
Medical problems:
- Feline lower urinary tract disease
(FLUTD): is a term used to describe multiple conditions of the lower urinary tract with similar clinical signs such as:
- Periuria: peeing out of the litter box.
- Dysuria: Pain when urinating
- Pollakiuria: urinating frequently and small puddles.
- Haematuria: blood in urine
- Stranguria: difficulty to pass urine.
The most common diseases
included in FLUTD are (swipe):
- FIC (60%)
- Urethral plug (18%)
- Urolyths (14%) (urinary stones and crystals)
- UTI (8%)
- Others (7%): cancer, trauma, etc.
To make your life easier, I have separated behavioural and medical conditions; although often, both situations happen at the same time like in Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC).
Inflammation of the bladder without a known cause (after testing); in this case, it is due to stress. Although we need to address the behavioural problem, it is important to treat also the medical condition (inflammation and pain), to solve the problem, and avoid any suffering.
In this case, as there is no bacterial growth, so we should avoid overusing antibiotics.
It is a common cause of blocked cats: they are not able to pass urine! It is a critical emergency, and we cannot wait to go to the vets.
Appart of these conditions cited above, some other diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease, etc. that facilitate FLUTD.
To solve the problem of inappropriate urination, we will need to know the cause and treat it. As I said above, sometimes it is not so simple as giving tablets; as I always say, behavioural problems are not easy to solve and require a behaviourist working hand to hand with the vet.
NUTRITION:
How to manage urinary problems will vary a lot depending on the cause of the problem. Meaning that we will need to give specific diets for each situation, ie: crystals may need a specific diet, Stress-related cystitis (FIC) might need painkillers and stress management, etc. There are commercial diets for each situation, and your vet will advise you the best. If you are feeding alternative diets, you might need to modify it too.
As you know, when changing diets and introducing new foods, needs to be done very progressively to avoid digestion problems and to have a better acceptation of the new food.
Independently of the cause, as a general rule, we need to increase the cat's water intake.
So, in urinary problems will be very important to use wet food, at least for 75% of the diet.
Appart of increasing the wet food, what do you do to increase your cat's water intake? Check my tips here.
